You've decided to rent an inflatable for your next event — great choice. But with so many options out there, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. Standard bounce house? Combo unit? Water slide? The right answer depends on your yard, your guests, and what kind of experience you want to create. Here's how to think through it.
Start With Your Guest List
The single biggest factor in choosing an inflatable is who will be using it. A group of 5-year-olds has very different needs than a mix of kids ages 4–14.
- Toddlers and young kids (2–6): A standard bounce house with low walls and simple features is safest and most fun for this age group. Avoid large obstacle courses or tall slides.
- Mixed ages (6–12): A combo unit with a bounce area and a small slide keeps older kids entertained while still being accessible to younger ones.
- Older kids and teens: Obstacle courses, larger slides, and interactive units hold their attention longer. Simple bounce houses can feel too "little kid" by age 10 or so.
Know Your Yard
Before you fall in love with a unit, measure your available space. You'll need to account for the inflatable footprint, a 3-foot clearance buffer on all sides, and clear overhead space for the unit height. Overhead power lines and low-hanging branches are the most common setup obstacles we encounter in Omaha neighborhoods.
Also consider your yard's surface. Inflatables anchor best on grass. Concrete or gravel setups are possible but require special anchoring and should be discussed with us before booking.
Bounce House vs. Combo vs. Water Slide
| Type | Best For | Space Needed | Typical Price Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bounce House | Ages 3–10, smaller yards, focused bounce time | 13×13 – 15×15 ft | $ (most affordable) |
| Combo Unit | Mixed ages, longer events, more variety | 16×16 – 20×20 ft | $$ |
| Water Slide | Summer events, ages 5+, high energy crowds | 20×10 ft or larger | $$–$$$ |
A standard bounce house is the right call for most birthday parties. It's affordable, easy to supervise, and works for a wide range of ages. If your party is 2 hours or less, a bounce house keeps kids moving and happy without overstimulating them.
A combo unit adds features like a climbing wall, slide, or basketball hoop alongside a bounce area. It's a great choice for longer events (3+ hours) where you need to maintain engagement, or for older kids who need more variety than a simple bounce house provides.
A water slide is the ultimate summer upgrade. Kids love them, but they require more prep — you'll need a water source nearby, a wet area, and a plan for towels and dry clothes. Perfect for July and August parties when the heat is on.
Think About the Weather
Omaha summers are hot and humid, which makes water features very popular June through August. But our springs and falls can bring wind and rain. When you book, make sure you understand the rental company's cancellation and rescheduling policy for weather — reputable operators will work with you on this.
As a general rule, inflatables should not be operated in winds over 20 mph or during rain. If severe weather is in the forecast on your event day, contact us early so we have time to make a plan.
